A smart toothbrush capable of detecting and blasting away unwanted plaque has been unveiled at CES 2020.

The tech showcase in Las Vegas features some of the most exciting technology for the coming year and Colgate’s  ‘Plaqless Pro’ is among them.

It glows blue when plaque is detected and then turns white when cleared, while synchronising with a smartphone via a Bluetooth connection.

The release of the tech-infused toothbrush sees Colgate join a crowded market in smart oral-care.

It has been largely dominated by Oral-B in recent years, with its AI-powered Genius X, released last year, offering customers the ability to ensure they brush all their teeth thoroughly.

Oral-B has also unveiled the Oral-B iO at CES, a smart brush redesigned internally and externally to provide 3D tracking around the mouth to make sure all teeth have been cleaned.

‘Oral-B iO goes beyond being a new toothbrush – it is an innovative brushing technology with a truly sensorial experience that users will feel, hear and see, transforming the act of brushing teeth from something they have to do into something they actually want to do,’ said Lisa Ernst, P&G VP Global Health Care R&D.

‘Six years of dedicated research were undertaken with dental professionals to discover a wholly original brushing experience.’

Oral-B claims that in its own clinical trials, the toothbrush yielded 100 per cent healthier gums in just one week. it also stated there was six times more plaque removal along the gumline when compared to a manual toothbrush.

Colgate claims its toothbrush has an embedded sensor which is specifically designed to detect the presence of the biofilm for every single tooth.

Besides the plaque detecting sensor, it is very similar in its abilities to the Oral-B GeniusX in its ability to create a map of where has and has not been cleaned.

This data is stored in an app on the user’s phone, where they can, if they so wish, peruse and analyse it to improve their oral hygiene.
